How is the Clarity of Your Conviction?

To achieve a goal, you need a clear purpose and firm conviction. In the Sanskrit language there is a word for a firm mind: vyavasayam., which means agriculture. To reap a harvest, a cultivator needs a firm mind with one conviction that “by doing such and such, you will harvest this much.” With such conviction one does everything towards fulfillment. You don’t haphazardly throw seeds on unprepared soil or sow the seeds and say, “I don’t have time to care for it.” A good cultivator doesn’t change when the going gets tough. He continuously uses his effort until his goal is reached. That is what is meant by a firm mind.

People with a fleeting type of mind don’t stick to one thing. They may choose something, but become scattered. When things get difficult or uncomfortable, those with an infirm mind will lose concentration and be distracted by the allure of an easier, softer, or cheaper way. They’ll keep switching to something else. It’s like digging many shallow wells. They never find water and are always thirsty.

The achievement of a worthy goal will require you to ride out the storms with dedicated, focused effort, knowing you won’t get the fruit over night. It won’t be easy. And it won’t happen without the clarity and conviction of a firm mind.

Imagine a fisherman who is determined to catch a fish. He is in a small boat in the middle of the lake. It’s raining, chilly, and windy and his boat is being blown about. He casts his line and keeps his eyes only on that. Nothing disturbs him. He could be sitting comfortably at home in an easy chair, but knows he won’t catch a fish that way. Even for the simplest thing one needs great concentration.

With the clarity and conviction of a firm mind you can stay focused on your goal. It won’t matter if you experience some physical or psychological suffering or if people tell you that you are wasting your time. You won’t be distracted by discomfort or temptation. Nothing will move you from your purpose.

When you hear, “Leave that, and come watch television,” and you say, “No, I’m catching a fish and I won’t budge an inch until I do.” Then you are a true fisherman, not just someone who fishes as a hobby.

The Entitled Generation – And Another Side To The Vancouver Riots

The following editorial was found in the Calgary Herald this morning about the vandalism and chaos in Vancouver this past week.

I had my two teenage daughters read this editorial. It lead to a great discussion. Being passionate about accountability, I found myself jumping on this bandwagon. However, we all felt that although Mr. Low makes a valid argument about the disaffected youth of our time and the absence of parental responsibility, it is a sweeping generation and an over-simplistic assessment. As my kids pointed out, the same could be said about a small segment of the youth at any time in history, and lets not forget about the young people who have been contributing to the clean up.

Constancy: Success Lies In Your Habits

Walt Disney had four keys to success. One of them was constancy. I interpret constancy as “staying on the path whether or not you are in the mood.” However, first you have to have a path, a direction a vision. And then you have to stay with it even when you are bored, fearful, or inconvenienced. That is what will give you success and self-respect in your life. I first learned this as a nationally ranked distance runner. I had to get out and train, day after day after day, whether I felt like it or not. Of course, some days I was tired and ran more slowly or shut it down early. But developed the habit early in my life to show up and put the running shoes on.

Since my early days of running, I’ve learned to apply this principle of constancy to every aspect of my life. Whether it’s the day-to-day grind of parenting, business development, serving the customer, or staying with a spiritual practice, constancy is what brings success – and self-worth. If you can’t rely on yourself, how can you be a reliable person? And if you aren’t reliable, how can you achieve anything?

It’s good to get inspired every so often, but it’s the day-to-day work you do when you aren’t inspired that produces the results. Sometimes your heart isn’t in it. Sometimes you’re tired. Sometimes you’re afraid. Sometimes it’s just plain hard work. But you put the running shoes on and show up, not because it’s the easy thing to do, but because it the right thing to do. That’s the Law of Constancy.

Bridges Of Trust: Making Accountability Authentic

Everyone’s saying it: organizations needs to be accountable. Leaders need to be accountable. Employees need to be accountable. So why do most accountability programs fail?

The concept and experience of accountability needs rejuvenation. You have to get to the deep meaning of accountability. You have to be clear about who you are accountable to, “for what specific results,” and “for what matters most.” If you aren’t, accountability becomes just another organizational buzzword, or worse, a hammer to punish people,

Accountability, when understood and applied effectively, will transform the your organization, your work, and your life. Accountability is the keystone of trust, the foundation of labour and life.

In it’s simplist form, accountability is the ability to be counted on. Real accountability is rooted in the behaviour of people. It is not, as some think, a character trait or something embedded in an organization. Accountability is determined by how you act.

When people accept real accountability, life in an organization or in a relationship is straightforward and productive. No one needs a pack of dogs eating their homework or a fresh pile of excuses to explain incomplete tasks. People do what they say they are going to do—and paradoxically when this happens real accountability creates enormous freedom and the opportunity for creativity.

Real accountability leads us back to our roots as people with integrity, unleashing the human potential that can so easily be suppressed. In our complex organizations, our busy families and our fast paced society, accountability can be diffused or completely lost—and when accountability is lost, we lose touch with our core. When we grasp real accountability we get a grip on results.

Accountable Behaviours

Real accountability requires you to do four things consistently:

1. Take Ownership. No one but you cares about the reason you let someone down. Deciding, once and for all, that all blame is a waste of time, will change your life forever. Decide to give to others what you expect from others. Be the change that you wish to see around you. Deciding that you have helped create the world around you – and therefore you are the one to step into healing it – is the ultimate act of accountability. Ownership means choosing service over self-interest, contribution over consumerism, and gratitude andgenerosity over entitlement. Ownership makes you a force in the world that changes the world. George Bernard Shaw knew this when he said, “This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”

2. Carry through to completion the responsibilities entrusted to you. Henry Ford once said, “you can’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do.” Real accountability means only making promises you know you can – and will – deliver. Real accountability also requires you to search for and clarify accountabilities that are assumed in your roles, to judge which accountabilities you accept, and to carry those accountabilities through to completion. When you make a promise to someone you now have a creditor, where a debt is owed. Once you have made the promise, accountability means that you then deliver on your promise. When circumstances prohibit you from fulfilling your promise, let the creditor know as soon as you know, that the commitment is jeopardized. Negotiate, at this point, to minimize damages and re-commit to a new course of action.

3. Stand up for your actions. Real accountability depends upon transparency. Others need to know who did what, and who is accountable for doing something. Standing up for your actions in public is very relaxing when you are confident that you have acted ethically and with your best efforts. Standing up for your actions is another aspect of ownership, in that it means owning up to mistakes. Though owning up publically for the mistakes you make may not be comfortable, it takes less effort and results in more respect than hiding or running from the truth. No one ever thought less of a person who stood up and said, “I’m accountable for that.”

4. Stand behind your results. The effects of your actions—your results—matter more than the actions themselves. Yes, you sent the memo, but did the memo produce the desired effect? You explained to your child how much a pencil hurts when jabbed into an uncle, but has her behaviour improved? People are accountable for producing a result, not just for taking an action. Real accountability encompasses the unintended results as well as the ones you mean to produce. When you act to stop a child’s unsocial behaviour, you are also accountable for the effect your actions have on the child’s sense of safety and love. Or when you produce a high quality running shoe, you are accountable for the effect your plant’s effluent has on the local water supply. Real accountability requires an acceptance of responsibility for all the results your actions (or inactions) produce.

With Trust Comes Responsibility

I was recently approached by a marketing company to purchase my data base – for a good price. I make a promise to everyone who trusts me with their email address that I will not use this data base for any purpose except to send them – at most – monthly e-articles and updates about my business. I have learned that with trust comes responsibility. Trust is like a delicate flower. It can take years to build and it can be destroyed with one decision.

Not many things in life are more valuable than the trust that people extend to you. When you are given trust, treat it with sacredness. Nothing, at the end of the day, is worth more than the strength of character that emerges from being trustworthy. It’s priceless.

Tyrants are not leaders – but what can they teach us?

Moammar Gadhafi, a man obsessed with hanging on to power, has released inconceivable brutality against his own people. After over four decades in power, I hope we can learn something from this malicious madman.

Here are some the lessons I propose can be learned from tyrants:

1.    Just because you are in power, it doesn’t make you a leader. Leadership is about presence, not position. You can’t assume leadership or get promoted to leadership. You have to earn it.

2.    Be aware of what power does. Ultimate power, without conscience or accountability, corrupts. Beware of the dark side of power within and around us.

3.    True leadership requires strong conscience and character and an ability to look within and work toward the betterment of all constituents. In the movie “Gladiator,” Caesar told his general, Maximus, that he would be the next leader of Rome. Maximus genuinely questioned this decision, asking Caesar why he was being chosen rather than Caesar’s own son, Comitus. Caesar summed up the importance of character and conscience perfectly when he looked Maximus in the eyes and responded, “Comitus cannot rule. Comitus must not rule. For Comitus is not a moral man.”

4.    Have a healthy respect for the power of darkness – both within you and around you. Having the courage to face the darker side of my own nature – my insecurities, addictions, depression – has made me a better person and I think a better leader. By embracing the full spectrum of our humanness we avoid seeing people as objects and using them for our own self-serving needs, and instead see them as humans, with needs, concerns, values, and dreams. Looking at tyrants such as Gadhafi can help shed light on this darker side of ourselves.

If you are interested in leadership, study leaders: both great ones and corrupt ones. We can learn from having terrible people around us in positions of power – not just how we don’t want to be, but how we have the potential to be.

Obuntubotho – The Essence of Being Human – And of Being A Great Leader

When Bishop Desmond Tutu introduced Nelson Mandela at his inauguration as the new president of South Africa, he described him as being a man who had Obuntubotho. “Obuntubotho,” he said, “is the essence of being human. You know when it is there and when it is absent. It speaks about humanness, gentleness, putting yourself out on behalf of others, being vulnerable. It embraces compassion and toughness. It recognizes that my humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”

Obuntubotho is not only the essence of being human. It’s the essence of great leadership, because the essence of great leadership is being human.

Who do you know in your workplace or in your life who has this quality of Obuntubotho? When you stop and pay attention, you know when it’s there, and you know when it is absent. As a leader, how are you consciously developing this quality within yourself?

“Hire For Character; Train For Cashiers”

The quote in the title of this blog is from an executive at Nordstrom, an upscale department store chain in the US who understands a vital component to culture: the importance of character. You can’t teach character in a training seminar, because it’s not a skill; it’s the essence of who a person is. As my late father would say, “it can’t be taught, but it can be caught.” We spend a great deal of time, in our work with culture, to hire and develop strong character.

And. speaking of character, the press conference for the retiring Calgary Flame, Craig Conroy grabbed my attention this week. Conroy is one of those guys who’s jersey won’t be raised to the rafters of the Saddledome. There won’t be any heavy hardware in his trophy cabinet and he won’t be counted among the most talented players in the league.

“But” as George Johnson, of the Calgary Herald, writes, “who Craig is, what he stands for, how he conducts himself, his sense of humor, and self-awareness are rare, and essential ingredients to a great organization…”

A class act, that’s what Craig Conroy is. And the Flames are wise to keep a guy like that in the office of their organization. “Hire for character; train for cashiers.”

The Value Of Temperance

Temperance – the willingness to give up what we want in order to have what we need –  gets a bad rap in our culture. Most of us associate moderation with repression. My parents grew up with the mindset of sacrifice, duty, and restraint for the greater good. However, in an age of consumerism, debt, and instant gratification, we are out of balance. Knowing what you can, and need, to live without can be liberating. Learning to set limits on our desires is the beginning of freedom.

You can’t always get what you want. I am learning that in my life – the  hard way. You can’t get to your heart’s true desires until you set limits on your hungers. The chaos of indulgence brings pain and anguish, while calm, clear moderation actually affords us the opportunity to realize our dreams. I have found that unbridled wants block me from realizing my potential.

From the amount and kind of food you eat, to the amount of money you spend, to how you spend your time and with whom, to making sure your “to-do list” has a corresponding “don’t-do list,” intelligent temperance will change your life and the world around you.

Service With A Cause: Our Lives Depend On It

My good friend, Ray Robitaille, a senior police officer with the Calgary Police Service, will leave for Afghanistan next month as part of a peace-keeping mission. Ray is leaving his young family behind for eight months to work on the United Nations/European Union mission to help train Afghanistan’s national police force. He is making sacrifices because he stands for something important. I admire him greatly for this, and I know, with his skills and experience, he will make a significant contribution to this cause.
